Civil rights laws and regulations also apply in school and in the workplace. This is because there are high chances that people can face discrimination in school or on the job and it’s important to know the laws and what your basic rights are. If you feel that you have been violated in some way, you need to seek counsel from a qualified professional as soon as possible to help find justice in this situation.

There are two different situations when it comes to civil rights in school and in the work place. It also depends on the type of school and the type of job. It’s important to look at the two separately so that you can understand the laws and how they protect you in these situations.

Civil Rights in School

For the most part, civil rights in schools only apply to public schools. This is because private schools have private funding and within certain limits, can make their own rules and acceptance policies. As long as these rules do not violate basic human rights, they can choose entry as they see fit.

However, public schools that are funded by taxes and government agencies are bound by stricter rules. No public school is allowed to discriminate against a child based on race, religion, sex, parent work place and other factors that would violate civil rights.

This also means that no child should be denied the access to an equal education as their peers. If you feel that your child has had their civil rights violated in some way by a public school will need to contact a professional to help you with this matter properly and in the legal way.

Civil Rights in the Workplace

Civil rights in the workplace are meant to protect people in the United States who are employed both at will and in contract positions. The basic laws enacted and protected by the federal government state that a person cannot be discriminated against in the workplace due to race, religion, sex, and other personal factors.

If you were denied a job or fired from a job for a reason that you think is in violation of your civil rights, you need to take the proper steps to solve the problem legally. You should not try to retaliate or take matters into your own hands. Instead, you need to go through this with the proper channels.

Just like there are civil rights laws and regulations in place for the physically handicapped, there are also laws that protect those who are mentally handicapped or challenged. The world is a cruel place but when you are mentally challenged, it can seem even harsher. There are a lot of nasty people out there and then there are also those inconsiderate or naive people who violate the rights of others without even realizing it.

While most of us probably don’t like to think of such abuses, there are still people who neglect the rights of the handicapped or mentally challenged and even some who intentionally abuse or take advantage of such people.

Here are some examples of violations of the rights of the mentally handicapped:

•	Coercing a mentally challenged person to do what you want, sign documents, enter into contracts and other things that they are not capable of understanding
•	Denying someone a job based on a mental handicap
•	Denying entry to public school
•	Denying entry to a public facility
•	Hate crimes against people with mental disability

The problem with civil rights of the mentally handicapped is that sometimes the person being abused is not aware that they are a victim. They may be getting taken advantage of and not be capable of understanding the situation. This is when other members of the person’s life need to be able to recognize the signs of abuse or violation and what to do about it.

This is why there are laws in place to cover the civil rights of the mentally handicapped under law and when these laws are violated, legal action can be taken. If you or someone you love has been a victim of a civil rights violation, it’s important that you seek help from a professional as quickly as possible. This is because a professional can help you understand what your rights are and what legal action is available for you.

When you go to visit with an attorney who specializes in civil rights cases of this nature, it’s important you can trust the person who you hire to help you. You also want to be sure you work with someone who has experience specifically in this type of case so that they will have the unique education and experiences needed to give you the help you need.

You may know that the situation that has happened is wrong but you don’t have the knowledge to make it right or to seek justice under the law. This is where an experienced attorney can help you.

Civil rights exist today for the physically handicapped and it’s important that we continue to protect these people from discrimination as well as other dangers or injustices that they may face. Some people who are not handicapped and do not have a family member or friend who is will not think about the challenges that they face.

Here are some examples of how the civil rights of the handicapped might be violated directly or indirectly:

•	Someone else parking in a handicapped space
•	Using the handicapped bathroom stalls
•	Blocking access elevators and other routes for those who are disabled
•	Denying someone a job because they are physically handicapped
•	Harassment or abuse of the handicapped
•	Refusal to offer treatment due to a handicap
•	Denial of service in a restaurant or public store

This makes you think twice about using a handicapped bathroom or parking space when you are not handicapped yourself. People will handicaps or disabilities require the same basic rights as all humans and should not be treated differently yet many people do this, without even realizing it. Do you ever use terms such as “What are you, retarded?” These can be considered offensive and a violation of the civil rights of a person who is disabled or handicapped.

You want to work with a qualified attorney that you can trust to help you get this case resolved in the proper way. If you’re not sure how to handle this on your own, it is advised that you have a representative go with you or that your attorney is someone you can trust to act as your representative through these matters. Since you may need to talk openly about things that are sensitive in nature, you also want an attorney that you can trust and feel comfortable talking with. When you follow the right steps, you can handle this legal matter in the way that is best for you to see justice.

While you may not think that injustices like this are still happening in our modern times, it’s a sad fact that they are. Something needs to be done about it and if you are a victim, it’s important not to just sweep it under the rug or try to forget about it. You have the same civil rights as other Americans and you should be treated as such, according to the law.

Wrongful termination is an important issue that sometimes applies to civil rights cases. If you were fired from your job without a proper reason or due to age, sex, religion or other personal reasons, this could be a case of a violation of your civil rights. The only way to know for certain is to be aware of what your rights are and the laws in your state regarding employment contracts and civil rights.

To understand how the Civil Rights Act covers cases like this you need to understand that many people are employed “at will”. Basically this means that they do not have a formal employment contract with their employer or that they do have a written contract with an “at will” clause in it. Even “at will” employees are entitled to certain legal protections under the Civil Rights Act. This means that you cannot be fired for reasons that violate public policy or the law.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 protected employees from discrimination at work which means they could no longer be terminated due to:

•	Race
•	Gender
•	Religion
•	Skin color
•	National origin
•	Etc

This meant that employment laws would have to change as well. An employer could no longer hire and fire at will simply because they owned or operated the business. These laws also protect some cases of failure to hire due to discrimination. If you feel that you have been fired in a way that violates your civil rights, the first step is to seek the help of an expert. You do not want to fight, argue or cause a scene in any way in order to protect a favorable legal outcome.

Your first step should be to talk with an attorney qualified in civil rights cases of wrongful termination. You should give them your story along with any evidence and proof you have of what happened and they will be able to best advise you on what to do for your case.

In order for a case like this to win in court, there has to be proof that you were fired for unjust reasons. If your employer has any proof that they had other reasons to fire you, then your case will not hold up even if you suspect it was a prejudice that actually caused it.

You want to work with a qualified attorney that you can trust to help you get this case resolved. Since you may need to talk openly about things that are sensitive in nature, you also want an attorney that you can trust and feel comfortable talking with. When you follow the right steps, you can handle this legal matter in the way that is best for you to see justice.

We continue to see civil rights laws change and adapt with the times and this is really an evolution of our society. It’s a natural process that we can expect to see continue over time. A recent trend is civil rights for sexual orientation and there is much debate still around the country and the political figures over this one.

Gay marriage is a perfect example of this heated debate. There are some who believe that homosexual couples should be allowed the same rights as heterosexual couples when it comes to marriage, potential tax deductions, getting insurance and other matters. There are some who believe that gay marriage should not be legal and that these unions should not be recognized under the law.

Most homosexuals believe that their civil rights are being violated when they are denied the right to get legally married by the state due to sexual orientation. There are a small group that agree that these are the laws of our country and they are content with their sexual orientation, regardless of the governments’ support of that or not.

Here are some examples of the debate of civil rights for sexual orientation:

•	No one should be denied a job because they are gay yet teachers are being fired because it is said that they are not a “good example for children that they come in contact with”
•	A gay couple can adopt a baby but are not legally capable of getting married under the law in their state, thus preventing them from tax advantages and other legal issues that heterosexual couples get
•	Hate crimes exist against homosexuals when it comes out what their sexual orientation is
•	A person is denied entry into the military or other government position due to their sexual orientation

These are just a few examples of cases of civil rights in regard to sexual orientation that are taking place currently in our country. Different states are taking different stances on these issues and it’s clear that many of these matters will not be resolved quickly.

While all states and the federal government agree that no person should be physically injured or emotionally assaulted due to sexual orientation, not all agree on matters such as whether or not these people should be allowed to get married under the law or to work with children and students as teachers. The debate continues and the outcome could clearly affect our future laws in this country.

One thing that created the Civil Rights as we know them today was people willing to stand up for what they believed were right and just. This is where civil rights marches came in and they are still held today. A civil rights march can be a peaceful demonstration where a group of people come together to make a statement about something they believe to be unjust or in violation of human rights or American rights under the Civil Rights Act. The 1960s had quite a few civil rights marches, many of which became an important part of American history.

Some examples of civil rights marches are:

•	March for equality between races
•	Quality between sexes
•	When a child was shown injustice at a public school (denied entry without good reason, etc)
•	Wrongful termination
•	When someone is killed or injured because of race, religion, sex or other differences
•	Hate crimes
•	Hate crimes against the disabled
•	Discrimination against the disabled
•	New laws being passed or acts enacted in a state or federal level

While the principles behind these civil marches are good, they can sometimes get out of hand. Marches have turned into riots before and people have been injured or even killed. This is never the intent behind a civil rights march but since these are often very heated debates, people can let their emotions run away with them. Police usually try to watch these peaceful marches closely to help keep the peace.

Some civil rights marches for the disabled involved wheelchairing across cities or even states to raise awareness of a cause. Sometimes civil rights marches will take themselves directly to Washington, DC, the home of our capital to really get noticed. They can also happen outside Supreme Court when a controversial case is being tried.

If you plan to take part in a cause that you care about and join in a civil rights march, you can talk to leaders of certain organizations to find out when and where these will be taking place. Make sure you understand the purpose behind the march and that you take proper safety precautions.

It is also your responsibility to do your part to keep the march a peaceful event. Do not bring weapons or bait or encourage trouble makers at the event. You have a right to peacefully protest something you do not agree with and when done correctly, it can be important to creating needed change in the country. Without civil rights marches of the 60s, we have no idea when action would have finally been taken regarding the discrimination of blacks and others in our country.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a revival and renewal of the Civil Rights Act of 1875 which was old and outdated. America was growing a as a country and there was great need for improvements in the way the people were treated throughout the country. All people were not being treated equally and there was no law to help protect this.

President John F. Kennedy proposed the Act and spent his years in term enforcing the Act that was originally created my President Grant, and in accordance with the Fourteenth Amendment. Kennedy announced his plans for a new Act that protected the people in a public speech on June 11, 1963. The civil rights of people in the south were being ignored and injustices were happening all over with no set laws to protect or enforce such behaviors.

Kennedy believed the federal government had a right to protect these people and also wanted to abolish the Jim Crow laws of the south which made it impossible for black people to vote, which should have been a basic right of a United States citizen.

Enacting such laws would not be easy as an earlier Supreme Court ruling won out on the issue saying that it was a private matter and that the federal government would not act on such cases that applied to private citizens. This Supreme Court ruling originally said that they could not force equality on private business owners.

Basically this meant that if you owned a business or public property and you did not want to allow people of a certain race or religion to enter the premises, you had the right under the law to prevent them. This meant blacks could not shop in certain stores, take certain public transportation or even enter certain churches. Signs that read “no blacks” abounded in the south and African Americans were hardly any more free than when they had been slaves.

So Kennedy had to propose his Act under what was called the Commerce Clause and intense debate surrounded because of it. While the legislation was being discusses in the House of Representatives, President Kennedy was assassinated and sadly, never got to see the Act become passed.

After the tragic assassination of President Kennedy, President Lyndon B. Johnson took over and actively began pushing and promoting the act that was finally passed on July 2nd 1964. Since then, the Act has been added to and expanded to protect United States citizens from:

•	Racism
•	Prejudice in school
•	Sexism
•	Prejudice in employment

To understand civil rights as they are today, it’s important to know as much as you can about the civil rights movement. This was a struggle for rights for everyone as we know it today and it greatly impacted the civil rights laws that we have still today. This wasn’t so much a battle over race, as many people might believe, but was in fact, a struggle to improve decency among human beings and to state legally that all human beings truly are created equal and should be treated as such.

The civil rights movement was years in the making but really came to a head in 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat n a bus. That same year, Emmitt Till was hung in the south because he whistled at a white woman. These were two separate incidents that created outrage in the people and boycotts began to happen with people of all races who didn’t believe that this discrimination was just.

These two events brought the views of the civil rights movement to national television and more and more people joined the cause. This is a very important milestone in American history because the United States could not proper claim to be a great and free nation when all of its citizens were not given the proper human rights. Equal rights would need to be awarded to everyone who was a citizen of the country and before the Civil Rights movement, this was not the case.

A person of the United States would need to have equal rights to all privileges, such as the right to vote. In the south, there were places where blacks were not allowed to enter and they would have to ride in a different section on public transportation or not allowed on public transportation at all. These were the types of civil rights violations that the civil rights movement sought to stamp out.

Because of these errors that were set in place in society, a new set of leaders came from both the religious and political bodies who set out to change these problems and create a better future for all of America. President Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr. both worked to create equality in all people and set in place laws and regulations that we still practice today. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 began to put these regulations into place in a legal standpoint and that has continued to grow even to today.

A civil rights attorney is s special type of attorney that specializes in cases where civil rights have been violated. If you feel that your rights have been breached in some way, your first step is to contact an experienced civil rights attorney right away. The quicker you act against this unjust treatment, the quicker something can be done about it.

Here are some ways in which your civil rights could be violated:

•	Religious views or orientation
•	Racial background
•	Sex or sexual orientation
•	Disabilities

If you were fired from your job or denied entry into a public school for one of these reasons, that would be a violation of your rights, for example. Your civil rights are guaranteed under law so if you think that you have been violated, it’s important to take the proper steps under the law to get justice.

Sometimes the laws can vary according to where you live such as what state you live in so this is why you need to work with an attorney who is experienced in these types of cases in your area. If you call them as soon as the incident has occurred, they will be able to tell you whether or not your case is valid.

Finding a lawyer with the proper civil rights experience for your case is important. You want to know that they are not only experienced as an attorney but also in civil rights cases. You can ask about cases they have done before and also look up the legal cases that they have tried to see outcomes of those public cases and more.

You want a lawyer with the education and expertise that you need so taking the time to do proper research is important. As you may already know, not all attorneys are the same and in a case where your civil rights have been breached, you may also need to talk with someone about things that make you uncomfortable or angry. This is why you also want to pick an attorney that you feel comfortable talking to.

You also want to make sure the attorney you are looking to hire specializes in your particular type of civil rights matter so that you can get the proper attention and expertise you need. They will then be able to properly advise you regarding your case and your rights and tell you the course of action that is best for your scenario.

When you say the term “civil rights”, a lot of people still don’t know exactly what that means. It’s a phrase that can be complex in its meaning and that has a rich history in our country. Basically, civil rights are the rights on an individual to receive equal treatment and also to be free from discrimination and unfair treatment in a variety of settings.

This may include employment, education, housing and other situations as protected by law. It’s important to understand however, that civil rights are different than civil liberties because the concept of civil rights is that people all have a basic right to be free from unequal treatment based on certain protected characteristics like gender, race and disability.

Civil liberties are considered broader in nature and they are guaranteed by law on a federal level. Civil rights are meant to protect people’s safety as well as protect them from discrimination. Civil rights are also meant to protect freedom of speech, thought and expression as well as freedom of religion.

Civil rights protect people from being discriminated against because of:

•	Physical or mental disability
•	Race
•	Sex
•	Sexual orientation
•	National origin
•	Age
•	Immigration status
•	And more

You are also protected from unwarranted action from the government or from private organizations. Civil rights also say that all people deserve natural justice in law, the rights to an attorney in legal cases, due process and a fair trial and the right to seek redress. We have rights to participate in civil society as well as politics.

While civil rights can be simple, there is a complex process that has led up to the civil rights laws and regulations as we know them today. History is always in the making as the laws continue to change and evolve as our society has need for it.

If you feel that your civil rights have been violated in some way, it’s important that you seek the advice of an expert to help you determine if you have a case and in what ways your rights were violated. There are attorneys who specialized in only these types of cases and they can help you seek justice that is fair if you were violated according to the law.

In some cases if your rights were violated but the current laws are not clear on this matter, a professional can help you take this case to court for the justice you deserve and also help put new laws in the books that prevent this from happening to others in the future.
